First Day Hike Beside the Bay
When: January 1, 2012, 1 p.m.-2:30 p.m.
Where: Waquoit Bay Reserve, 149 Waquoit Highway, Falmouth

This mile-long walk is a fantastic way to begin 2012! Beginning at the Waquoit Bay Reserve Visitor Center in Falmouth, this guided nature walk will take you along woodland trails, fields, and beachfront habitat with a spectacular panoramic view of Waquoit Bay. Nature abounds in this area, so bring your binoculars and be on the lookout for native wildlife that make Cape Cod their winter home. At the end of your walk, head back to the Visitors Center to warm up and relax with a cup of hot chocolate.

Wednesday Walks with Connie Boyce

Renowned local naturalist, Connie Boyce, leads these popular walks on Wednesday morning from the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster. Each week has participants venturing to a different place to explore the history and natural environment of Cape Cod, from cranberry bogs and conservation areas to marshlands and seaside trails. Walks require some physical stamina - plan on covering approximately 3-4 miles over about a 2 hour period.

Not So Polar Plunge
When: January 8, 2012 at 9:30 a.m.
Where: Cape Codder Resort & Spa, 1225 Iyannough Road, Hyannis
Admission: $25 (Reservations required) $10 donation appreciated from bystanders.

For those of you who (like me) aren't quite crazy enough to leap into a freezing cold body of water on a January day, the "Not So polar Plunge" is a fun way to support a great cause! Put on your swimsuit and dive into the Cape Codder Resort's heated outdoor pool to benefit the Housing Assistance Corporation of Cape Cod. To warm you up after your dip, there'll be hot cocoa and coffee served in the Hearth 'n Kettle Restaurant.

Untamed Forests and Shores: A History of Cape Cod Wildlife

A visit to the Sturgis Library (the oldest public library in the US) is always a fascinating outing. This month, the Library's event calendar features a presentation by Theresa Barbo, Director of the Cape Wildlife Center, on the birds and animals inhabiting Cape Cod's woodlands, shores, marshes and fields. Her illustrated presentation will be chock-full of gorgeous images of native and migratory wildlife, along with fascinating tales of survival, rehabilitation and release of our furred and feathered friends back into to the wild.

Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra: Tchaikovsky's Winter Dreams
When: January 21, 2012 at 8 p.m. and January 22, 2012 at 3 p.m.

Jung-Ho Pak conducts the Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra in this enchanting performance of Tchaikovsky’s First Symphony and First Concerto, featuring the enormously talented pianist Martina Filjak, Piano Winner of the Cleveland International Piano Competition.
FYI: The Cape Cod Symphony Orchestra and local radio station Ocean 104.7 have teamed up to sponsor a "Saturday with the Symphony Contest". Visit Ocean 104.7 to enter for a chance to win 4 tickets to the January 21st performance and a $50 dining certificate to Alberto's Ristorante in Hyannis.

Paws on Ice

Get out on the ice for an evening of skating to benefit the Cape Cod branch of the Animal Rescue League. This annual public skating event is a favorite among kids and adults on the Lower Cape. Highlights include special skating guests Sylvester and Big Red, raffle prizes, and more.

Annual WMVY Big Chili Contest
When: January 28, 2012 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

Although it takes place on Martha's Vineyard, I've included the WMVY Big Chili Contest among my Cape Cod events in January because it's only a short ferry ride away - and definitely worth a day trip to the Vineyard!
This annual fundraising event for the Red Stocking Fund finds the area's best amateur and professional chili chefs cooking up pots of their famous chili and vying to become the chili champ for 2012. Whose is best? You be the judge! Tickets sell out early, so advance purchase is definitely required.
