Places to Stay With the Beach and Nitelife in Walking Distance

by Justin
(Central MA)

Question: Hi, Don't wanna drive so looking for places to stay where it's all right there. Having a hard time, any suggestions? Just no P town, too far. Thanks again.

Justin

Dee's Reply: Hi, Justin - One of the unique aspects of Cape Cod is that our beaches aren't lined with with hotels, bars, restaurants, tee shirt shops, and arcades. In most Cape Cod towns, the hub of activity is in the downtown area, and the beaches are a mile or more away. So realistically, to see and do it all, some mode of transportation (car, taxi, shuttle bus, or bicycle) is necessary.

For a totally car-free vacation in a town with great beaches and lots of nightlife, your best would be Provincetown. It's "all right there" in downtown P-town ... and fantastic beaches are just a bike ride or shuttle ride away.

I agree with you that P'town is a long drive/bus ride from Central MA. Have you considered going into Boston by bus or commuter rail ("the T"), then taking the ferry from there to Provincetown?

It's only about a 90-minute trip from Boston to Provincetown on the fast ferry. So that makes it a relatively quick trip as compared with driving or taking a bus the entire way from central MA to Provincetown.

If you'd rather stay somewhere that's centrally located on the Cape, then Hyannis is a good choice. Hyannis is in the mid-Cape region, so it's convenient from/to just about anywhere.

Choose lodging that's near Main Street, and pretty much everything will be within a reasonable walking distance for you. Shopping, restaurants and pubs, museums, galleries, daytime activities, and nightlife are all along Main Street.

You'll find all sorts of Water activities (fishing boats, harbor cruises, ferries to Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard) down by the Harbor - about a 10 minute walk from Main Street.

It's a bit of a hike to the beach from Main Street, but it's definitely do-able. Veteran's Beach is probably a 20 minute walk from Main Street, and Kalmus Beach will be another 10 minutes or so from there. (Click here for info about Hyannis beaches.)

I hope this information helps you narrow down your choices. Feel free to get back to me if you have more questions.

Enjoy your visit to Cape Cod!

Best Regards,

Dee
