What Clothes to Pack for Summer Vacation?

by Deanna

Question: Hi Dee. First I have to say this is the most informative site. I have never been to the Cape Cod area and you answer so many questions!

Ok, what clothes should be brought, normally on summer vacation, flip flops, summer dresses, shorts etc., but I notice in a lot of pics, people are always wearing a hoodie, or windbreaker. Is there a constant chill in the air?

I also am assuming my hair will look ridiculous in that environment, as it does when we vacation at the lakes in Michigan. So I am guessing I will need a baseball cap for my unruly thick hair.

One last question for my husband, is an air conditioner important in a rental, or will we be comfortable without it?

Thank you,

Deanna

P.S. Don't be surprised if I think of more ?'s later :)

Dee's Reply: Hi Deanna -

How interesting! I've never noticed that folks in many of my pics are wearing a hoodie or windbreaker. But now that you mention it, it makes perfect sense.

My favorite times to go out and about, exploring and snapping photos for my website, is when it's not quite so busy around here. That's during the "shoulder season" months of May, June, September, and October, when the weather is cooler and a hoodie or windbreaker is everyone's #1 fashion accessory.

Rest assured, though. There's no need to load your suitcases with heavy duds if you're coming to Cape Cod in the summertime.

In July and August it gets downright steamy here. So plan to pack light. Shorts, tees, sundresses, and swimsuits will get you through the day very comfortably.

As I suspect is also true in your lakes region, it always feels cooler on and near the water, especially in the early morning and later in the evening. So, if if you're anything like me (I get chilly easily), you'll probably also want to bring a light cover-up of some sort.

For sunrise and sunset beach walks, and when you're on a whale watch or harbor cruise, you might be glad to have a light jacket or sweatshirt handy!

Now, regarding your hair ...

Don't worry about it!!! Yes, you might frizz out a little bit in the salt air and sea breezes. So what??

You're coming to Cape Cod to relax and put the everyday lifestyle aside. Right? Well, that includes hair styling, too!

Unless you're going to be doing the dress-up thing for a special evening out, don't give at moment's though to packing special hair products, styling tools, etc. Bring a hat for sun protection, and call it a day.

Seriously. Think of it this way: Nearly everywhere you go, you'll be in the company of lots of folks who've just come off the beach or boat. We're all wind-blown, to one degree or another. Even with a little frizz going on, you'll blend in beautifully ;-)

Okay, with regard to vacation rentals and the need for air conditioning ...

That's a really good question - one that I've just decided deserves its own special page on my site. So bear with me for a day or two while I write the new page. As soon as it's done, I'll post a link to it here.

Finally, please don't hesitate to ask as many questions as you'd like. You can use the "Click here to post comments" link (below) to get back to me, or email me privately via my contact form, whichever you prefer.

I'm always happy to answer!

Best Regards,

Dee

P.S. Thanks so much for your kind words about my site. I'm so happy to know you're finding it helpful!
